Faculty Biographies:
Dimitrios Kostopoulos, PT, PhD, DSc
Dimitri Kostopoulos, PT, PhD, DSc is a leading authority in the area of Myofascial Pain and the co-founder of Hands-On Physical Therapy in New York.
He earned his Doctorate (PhD) and Master's degrees at New York University and his second Doctorate of Science (DSc) degree at Rocky Mountain University (Clinical Electrophysiology).
Dr. Kostopoulos has an extensive training and teaching experience in different areas of manual therapy with emphasis in Trigger Point, MyoFascial, NeuroFascial Therapy and Manipulation. He also specializes in Electroneuromyography Testing. He is a past faculty member at Mercy College, a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management and an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association.
Dr. Kostopoulos has taught students in the US, Europe and Africa and has published numerous articles.
He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies published by Elsevier.
Dimitrios Kostopoulos and Konstantine Rizopoulos are the authors of the Book, the Video and the Posters of "Trigger Point & MyoFascial Therapy", and the Video Series in Manual Therapy as well. (order here)
They are also the developers of a comprehensive therapeutic approach that integrates trigger point, myofascial, NeuroFascial, Proprioceptive and manipulative therapy techniques.
Konstantine Rizopoulos, PT, FABS
Konstantine Rizopoulos, PT, FABS is a leading authority in Myofascial Pain and the co-founder of Hands-On Physical Therapy. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Athens, Greece. Mr. Rizopoulos has extensive experience in the area of manual therapy, particularly in MyoFascial and Trigger Point Therapies and their application to neurologic and pediatric populations.
Mr. Rizopoulos has completed extensive postgraduate studies in the area of Manual Physical Therapy. He is an active member of the APTA, Fellow member of the American Back Society and a member of the Hellenic Medical Society. He lectures frequently in conferences and continuing education courses through Hands-On Seminars.
Jeff Hathaway, PT Mr.
Jeff is a graduate of Ithaca College and the owner of PRO-Active PT and Breakthrough PT, which has multiple locations in North Carolina and New York. His clinics were one of the first in the nation to be certified in Evidence Based Practice by Evidence in Motion.
He has extensive training in business development, conflict management, interest-based negotiation, team dynamics, change dynamics, communication skills and workers' compensation/industrial consulting. He is a recognized national speaker and an author on business and physical therapy related topics.
He has been a Physical Therapist for 24 years, a certified business coach, and is dedicated to moving the profession forward toward autonomous practice and a being primary player in the healthcare continuum. Jeff is currently enrolled in a transitional DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) program through Evidence in Motion.
Mark Amir - MAPT, DipMDT
After graduating from Brooklyn College with a degree in Physical Education, Mark obtained a masters degree in Physical Therapy from Touro College in 1993. In 1998, he was one of 173 international graduates of the McKenzie institute, where he became a diplomate of MDT.
He has worked in various hospital settings providing both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and started a NJ based private practice in 1997. He is coauthor of the book "Why Does My Back Hurt So Much" and has helped multiple companies implement ergonomics programs. He has lectured in hospitals and schools and is currently a teaching assistant at Touro College. He is an active board member of the APTA and lobbies for state and federal health related issues. He graduated from Midwood High School where he played and then coached football, has run in two NYC Marathons, is a dedicated student and teacher of the self defense discipline of Krav Maga, and personally believes that Brooklyn is the best Borough in the world. He has 3 sons who he inspires by being a proactive, health conscious role model.
Dan Rootenberg MS, PT, CSCS
Dan Rootenberg, co-founder and President of SPEAR Physical Therapy, is a skilled therapist with extensive research experience in biomechanics, and is a former professional baseball player, having played in numerous leagues around the world.
Dan began his career at the Hospital for Special Surgery, the nation's top orthopedic hospital, where he developed advanced clinical skills in orthopedic and sports injury management. Dan conducted several research projects analyzing the impact of stretching and strengthening on the biomechanics of the golf swing. Dan was involved in a project analyzing the biomechanics of the throwing motion at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham. Dan has published a number of articles in national physical therapy journals.
Dan has played professional baseball on three continents. He was signed to a minor league contract in the Frontier league in Chillicothe, Ohio after college. From 1997-2004, Dan helped the Swiss Champion, Zurich Barracudas win three medals in the European Cup Championships. Dan continued his baseball career in the summer of 2007 when he was a first round draft choice in the Israel Baseball League, the first pro baseball league in the Middle East.
The unique combination of Dan's clinical background and the longevity of his sports career have enabled him to intimately understand the body's capacity to perform, facilitating his clients ability to reach their maximum potential.
Dan received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Binghamton University in 1994, along with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Touro College in 1997. Dan has been a featured lecturer for the American Physical Therapy Association, has appeared as a guest on the radio show Sports Talk New York, and was featured in the award-winning documentary "Holy Land Hardball". Dan lives in NYC with his wife and two sons.
David Sofer
David Sofer PT is a NYS licensed physical therapist with over 10 years experience in private practice.He is the President and CEO of Community Physical Therapy of Brooklyn, an outpatient orthopedic physical therapy office, which he founded in 2004. David founded PhysioCentral Online, a global online social network for PT's in 2009. He is currently an adjunct professor in the SUNY Downstate physical therapy doctoral program and also an active member of numerous professional associations. He is soon to take over as the District Chair of the Brooklyn/Staten Island district of the NYPTA, and a contributing member of The NY Council for Licensed Physiotherapists and the Alliance of Independent Physical Therapists. Currently, he is enrolled in the Evidence in Motion DPT program and looks to receive his doctorate in 2011.
