Advanced Manipulative Therapy (AMT): A Canadian Approach

Spinal Biomechanical Assessment and Manipulation
July 17-19, 2015 - Astoria, NY

Learn the skill of spinal manipulation!

Are your neck or back pain patients plateauing with your current treatment approach? Do you find yourself feeling a little unsure of how to thoroughly assess and treat spine issues?

Learn how to accurately assess and treat spinal problems with spinal manipulation techniques that will take your manual therapy skills to the next level.

The Advanced Manipulative Therapy series of courses has been developed and is instructed by Kevin Okamura, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT). Kevin will be teaching assessment and manipulation (High Velocity Low Amplitude thrust) treatment skills consistent with International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT) guidelines and is open to physical therapists and occupational therapists.

The Advanced Manipulative Therapy courses will focus on detailed biomechanical assessment of the spine and extremities, and progress therapists from effective mobilization to manipulation using HVLA thrust techniques safely and with confidence. Each course will have a high degree of practical time dedicated to developing your “hands on” skill set.

With the completion of all 5 Modules, therapists will have a whole new level of confidence with assessment and manipulation skills to effectively deal with ANY area of the body!

Whether you’ve had prior experience with spinal manipulation and are looking to brush up on your skills, or you’ve never had any experience with spinal manipulation and have been intimidated at the thought of it, this series of courses will transform the way you practice.

AMT 1: Cervical and Thoracic Spine Manipulation (2 day course)

No pre-requisite

IMG_5355

In Module 1, the anatomy and biomechanics of the cervical and thoracic spines will be reviewed in depth. This will lead to careful assessment of the unique aspects of the craniovertebral region, mid-cervical spine and thoracic spine. The relevant safety considerations and tests for each region will be emphasized and taught, and passive intervertebral movements will be performed. From here the concept of spinal locking prior to mobilization will be introduced. Mobilization techniques will be progressed and High Velocity, Low Amplitude (HVLA) thrust techniques (manipulation) will be introduced.

Module 1: Cervical and Thoracic Spine Manipulation registration fee: $495

AMT 2: Lumbar Spine and Sacroiliac Joint Manipulation (2 day course)

No pre-requisite

NEW 2

In Module 2, the anatomy and biomechanics of the lumbar spine and pelvis will be reviewed in depth. This will lead to thorough assessment of the lumbar spine and pelvis stability and mobility. The relevant safety considerations will be discussed, and passive intervertebral movements of the lumbar spine will be performed. Again, the concept of spinal locking prior to mobilization will be introduced. Mobilization techniques of the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints will be progressed and High Velocity, Low Amplitude thrust techniques (manipulation) will be introduced.

Module 2: Lumbar Spine and Sacroiliac Joint Manipulation registration fee: $495

AMT 3: Advanced Spinal Manipulation (2 day course)

Pre-requisite: completion of Modules 1 and 2

In Module 3, the emphasis is on reviewing and improving the proficiency of the manipulation techniques introduced in Modules 1 and 2, with more challenging and difficult techniques for all areas of the spine added. Evidence regarding the benefits of spinal manipulation will be discussed and different scenarios and case studies reviewed. At the end of Module 3 the skill of spinal manipulation will no longer seem daunting and something best reserved for other practitioners, and will be an invaluable skill set that will forever be a part of your practice!

Module 3: Advanced Spinal Manipulation registration fee: $495

***NOTE*** COURSE BREAKDOWN HAS BEEN ALTERED, THERE ARE NO MORE 3-DAY COURSES IN THE AMT, INSTEAD THE MATERIAL IS BEING DELIVERED OVER 5 MODULES)

AMT 4: Peripheral Joint Manipulation and Strengthening Strategies (2 Day course)

No Pre-requisite

Module 4 will look at the anatomy and biomechanics of the peripheral joints in depth. Assessment of joint stability, safety considerations and several manipulation techniques for the peripheral joints will be introduced. Often subtle biomechanical movement faults in the peripheral joints can lead to stubborn pain issues in the foot, ankle, elbow and wrist. These stubborn problems often resolve with relatively simple manipulation techniques that can be an invaluable addition to your manual therapy toolbox.

Additionally, since manual therapy is best complemented with effective exercises, numerous strengthening and stability strategies will be a major component of Module 4. This will include exercise approaches for improving back pain, neck pain and a number of peripheral pain issues.

Module 4: Peripheral Joint Manipulation and Strengthening Strategies registration fee: $495

AMT 5 – Certification in Advanced Manipulative Therapy (Cert. AMT) (3 day course)

Pre-requisite: completion of Modules 1,2,3 and 4

NEW 1

Module 5 is the certification 3-day weekend of the AMT: A Canadian Approach course series. Days 1 and 2 will review the manipulation techniques from all prior modules, with the goal being to transform your skills from proficiency to mastery. More challenging regions of the spine and alternate manipulation technique options will also be introduced. A case study will be discussed in depth to put the application of manipulation treatment into context with patient management. The practical exam will take place on Day 3 of the weekend. Each participant will be given short scenarios and asked to perform manipulations for each region of the spine and extremities. The practical exam length will be approximately 45 minutes. Successful completion of the exam will result in Certification in Advanced Manipulative Therapy: A Canadian Approach.

Module 5 – Cert. Advanced Manipulative Therapy (Cert. AMT) registratin fee: $595
