Health Insurers Push Premiums Sharply Higher, but
Physical Therapy Offers a
Promising Solution
In a recent article, The New York Times reports that major health insurance companies have been charging sharply higher premiums this year, outstripping any growth in workers' wages and creating more uncertainty for employers who are struggling to drive down an unrelenting rise in medical costs.
At the same time high co-pays have a significant effect on patients' seeking care. Some patients cannot afford to continue their Physical Therapy visits. Others are forced to stop their live saving chemotherapy treatment due to the high co-pays.

In a breakthrough study that examined non-Medicare claims data and compared self-referred episodes of physical therapy to physician-referred episodes of physical therapy, Direct Access to Physical Therapy lowered both costs and number of visits.
The study published in the journal Health Services Research (HSR), suggests that "the role of the physician gatekeeper in regard to physical therapy may be unnecessary in many cases."Patients who visited physical therapists directly for outpatient care had fewer visits and lower overall costs on average than those who were referred by a physician.
