Dear Colleagues and Course Participants:
Welcome to the first edition of Manual Therapy Horizons the New
official newsletter of Hands-On Seminars. From time to time you have been
receiving both clinical useful information as well as information about upcoming
seminars. However, many of you have expressed the desire to receive something
more complete and more comprehensive, in a consistent basis. Responding to your
requests, we are introducing today the Manual Therapy Horizons newsletter. It
will circulate monthly and will provide you with relevant information in the
area of manual therapy, updates, some research articles and will inform you
about promotions from Hands-On Seminars.
Also your clinical questions will be addressed. You may send clinical comments and questions at:
hos@handsonpt.org
Feel free to forward the newsletter to any other colleagues and friends.
All the best,
Dimitrios Kostopoulos, PT, PhD, DSc

The purpose of this column of the newsletter is to provide you with either a
research article or a review of research pertinent to the area of manual

CLINICAL ROUNDS:
"I work closely with an orthopedic surgeon who frequently refers patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Aside from stretching exercises and iontophoresis what else can you suggest as treatment options"
Tanya S, San Antonio, TX
ANSWER:
We definitely believe that physical modalities such as ionto and phonophoresis as well as splinting are important components in the treatment of CTS. These modalities though are components of a comprehensive treatment plan that must include a proper assessment and proper treatment, inclusive of manual therapy. Some of the important aspects to differentiate in a CTS is whether there is cervical spine involvement in addition to the compression/entrapment of the median nerve at the wrist. Lower cervical spine involvement will qualify it as a "double crush syndrome" and it will require treatment of the cervical spine in addition to the wrist. From a manual therapy point of view we generally recommend: Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy to the Scaleni group of muscles, Supinator & Brachioradialis muscles. Neurofascial Mobilization techniques for the median nerve and Spinal Mobilization of the lower cervical spine. Of course these techniques must be applied if there is appropriate clinical reasoning for the specific patient. Relevant HOS courses that cover these approaches are:
PT-01,
PT-02 and
PT-04.
Each month we showcase one of the instructors of Hands-On Seminars. In this
issue we would like to introduce
Janelle Allen MS, PT, MCMT
Janelle is a Certified Hands-On Seminars instructor and a recipient of the
Mastery Certification in Manual Therapy. Janelle is a graduate of D'Youville
College in Buffalo, NY where she received her Master's Degree in the school of
Health Sciences in Physical Therapy.
She is currently a Physical Therapist for a private orthopedic clinic that
specializes in manual therapy. She is a certified manual therapist, an MCMT
recipient and she is teaching manual therapy courses with Hands-On Seminars. She
is also a clinical instructor for her clinic teaching students various manual
therapy methods. She has been an adjunct professor for the Biology department
for Monroe Community College. While Janelle teaches several courses for HOS, she
will be on maternity leave for the next 3 months. We wish Janelle best luck with
the new baby and we are looking forward to her return to the teaching grounds.

Customer Testimonials
I wanted to let you know, how much I appreciated attending PT01 with Dr. Kostopoulos. The clarity, organization and positive way in which he presented the material, helped me to understand it completely. The lab session and lecture part given by Christine, was great! Her knowlege and hands on experience, encouraged me to perform the lab sessions with confidence. Because of such a positive learning experience, I registered for the rest of the seminar series. Thank you again for a great seminar, looking forward to PT2, PT3, PT4, PT5. Sincerely, Toni Mercogliano, PT
